Iron Horse
'66 Chevelle
Doug Lance
Clare, MI
Cold winters in Michigan seem to turn out the best of Detroit's past muscle cars. Four seasons locked up in the upper northwest left Doug Lance with nowhere to go but up. He started his build by saving it from the crusher. It has extensive powdercoating to the frame and chassis underneath. His purpose-built 496-incher was planted with an Eagle rotating assembly and Oliver main caps. For cylinder heads, he hogged out a pair of GM rectangle ports and topped it off with a Dart single-plane manifold. A Chuck Nuytten 1050 dominator feeds fuel, and a 250 shot plate supplies N20 down its throat. We can't wait to see what another harsh Michigan winter produces, as he is already pondering the use of a Procharger.

Super Shooter
'69 Chevelle
Tommy Sawyer & Rich Willie
Tucson, AZ
Beginning with straight tubes and a ground-up build three years ago, Tommy Sawyer and Rich Willie set out to build a Super Comp Chevelle. A gorilla-sized 600-inch Merlin with 15.5:1 compression powers the 'Velle with Pro-Filer Hitman cylinder heads. Swinging inside the block are an Eagle crank and rods with JE pistons and a Comp roller camshaft. A Chassisworks 9-inch rearend with a four-link assembly aids in traction. In order to shed the pounds, they opted for VFN fiberglass components. So far they've churned out an 11-second pass while letting off at half track. We can't wait to hear the numbers after a full pass.
